An Islamist extremist web site last week claimed two U.S. citizens had been captured and killed, including one who was described as a high-level intelligence aide to President Bush. The Fortress website disclosed a Dec. 17 videotape from a group called the Islamic Jihad Brigades which showed the identity cards of two men, but no recording of either man's capture or murder. The men were identified as Joseph James Wemple and Charles Toman or Tobin. Wemple was a U.S. construction engineer and Toman was described by the website as an intelligence aide to the president. Terrorists captured the men on Dec. 8, the statement said. According to U.S. press reports, however, Wemple was killed in Iraq with his employer, Dale Stoffel who was president of a construction and engineering firm, CLI USA, doing work in Iraq. Stoffel was also president of Wye Oak Technology, Inc. According to court documents obtained by the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Stoffel had a $11.5 million contract with Boeing to obtain Russian X-31 missiles. Legal action ensued when Stoffel failed to produce all the missiles sought. The case was closed and the file sealed by the presiding judge in September. -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
