Chinese Man Disarmed Outside United Nations POSTED: 7:42 pm EST January 1, 2005 UPDATED: 7:49 pm EST January 1, 2005 NEW YORK -- Police detained a Chinese man Saturday who approached a security booth outside U.N. headquarters and threatened to kill himself with a knife he held to his throat. The man went to a booth at 43rd Street and First Avenue around noon Saturday. A U.N. security guard called emergency services. New York police officers disarmed the man and detained him, a spokesman for the United Nations says. A U.N. translator was summoned to communicate with the man. The man, whose identity has not been released, won't be charged but will receive psychiatric care, New York police said.
