NEW YORK -- Police detained a Chinese man Saturday who approached a
security booth outside U.N. headquarters and threatened to kill
himself with a knife he held to his throat.
The man went to a booth at 43rd Street and First Avenue around noon
Saturday.
A U.N. security guard called emergency services.

New York police officers disarmed the man and detained him, a
spokesman for the United Nations says.
A U.N. translator was summoned to communicate with the man.
The man, whose identity has not been released, won't be charged but
will receive psychiatric care, New York police said.
Police said the man was distraught that he was rejected for U.S.
residency.
