United Press International Groups object to passport chips [World News] WASHINGTON, April 3 : Travel and privacy groups have objected to a plan to embed U.S. passports with radio frequency chips, saying the technology could create a security risk. State Department officials said the chips, powered by radio frequency identification technology, would allow customs agents to process travelers more quickly, the Washington Post reported.The government plans to issue the passports to diplomats in August and then expand the program to include all passports over the next year. The officials said the chips, which contain a digital record of all information printed on the passport, are part of a global effort to prevent passport fraud. However, groups representing travel-related businesses and privacy advocates, including the American Civil Liberties Union, have said the high-tech chips would do more harm than good.Each chip has an antenna that uses radio waves to transmit information to a machine reader.The critics said terrorists and thieves would be able to identify U.S. citizens using hand-held chip readers. -- ----------------- R.
