Insurgents infiltrating Iraq from Iran as well as Syria

The United States talks about insurgency infiltration to Iraq from
Syria, but the U.S. military faces a similar and growing problem
from Iran.
U.S. officials said Iran has increased infiltration of insurgents
and weapons over its western border into Iraq. The infiltration is
greatest in northern and southern Iraq.
Infiltration from Iran has been nothing new. What is new is that
Iran is sending larger insurgency forces with plenty of bombs,
particularly to the Basra area. The suspicion is that Iran wants to
destabilize southern Iran to accelerate pullout plans by the U.S.-
led coalition.
On July 20, Iraqi border police intercepted 20 insurgents attempting
to enter from Iran. Iraqi police opened fire on the insurgents, who
dropped their weapons and equipment about 90 kilometers north of
Basra and fled to their bases in Iran.
What the insurgents left behind provided Iraqi and coalition
investigators with a strong idea of what the Iranian agents intended
to do.
The equipment included 228 pounds of TNT, 29 electric detonators,
four shaped charges projectiles, electrical wire, one rocket-
propelled grenade launcher, one transmitter, two modified passive
infrared devices, seven batteries, four antennas and 270 pounds of
C4 explosives.
