There seems to be a pattern of people who are not Muslim interpreting the beliefs of Muslims and the meaning of Islam. I am certain that some of these interpretations were incorrect and presented a bias against Islam. I'm writing to make a simple request. If the editorial board of The Times wants me and others in La Salle County to become familiar with Islam, with its faith, with the reasons for practices such as the wearing of the hijab, please publish columns on these subjects written by Muslims. It is not helpful to me to learn what Christian writers think of Islam. What would be helpful is to hear of these things from those who live the Muslim faith every day. I would be grateful for a Muslim perspective on the use of the hijab, the basics of Muslim theology and the like. Interpretations of Islam by Christians do not further dialogue nor move us to a greater understanding of Islam. And in a world where Muslims seem to fear an anti-Muslim bias in the West, and where Christians feel free to make uninformed and even unkind statements about Islam, what we really need is true dialogue. We need to hear about Islam from Muslims, with the opportunity for Christians to respond kindly. So please, no more Christians telling me what Muslims believe. The only ones adequately qualified to interpret Islam are Muslims. And I'd love to read columns where they do so. Grace and peace, THE REV.
