Turkish Press Review Turkey in the Muslim world If Turkey is the most successful and developed country of the Muslim world, as revealed by almost all indicators, then why are Arab and Iranian companies in the top 10 of the top 100 companies of the Muslim world? The answer is oil. All these companies -- Saudi Aramco in particular -- operate in the oil sector. In Turkey, on the contrary, all assets come from economic activities. Holding companies such as Koç, Sabancı, Doğan, Ülker, Doğuş, İşbank, Akbank, Vakıfbank, Vestel, ENKA and Eczacıbaşı are more valuable to Turkey today than Saudi oil because these companies produce for Turkey more wealth than oil can. These companies are more valuable in sociological terms because they represent the success of the enterprising middle class that developed from small shops. They reflect social rationalization, a business mentality, the development of creativity, individualization, and democracy. In short, they reflect the modernization of Turkey. 31.01.2007 TAHA AKYOL, MİLLİYET +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
