Turkey warns companies against oil partnerships with Greek Cyprus
Turkey warned countries and companies that want to conduct oil
exploration in the eastern Mediterranean with Greek Cyprus, saying
agreements signed by the Greek Cypriot administration to that effect
would not be recognized by Ankara.

The Greek Cypriot administration, not recognized by Turkey, has recently
signed an agreement with Lebanon, delineating their respective exclusive
economic zones in the eastern Mediterranean, which would allow oil and
natural gas exploration to begin in the region. The agreement, signed on
Jan. 17, came despite Turkey's warnings that the Greek Cypriot
administration did not represent all of Cyprus and thus had no right to
sign deals on status of the island's exclusive economic zone. Greek
Cypriot news reports said oil and gas exploration would start in the
eastern Mediterranean in February.

“We remind countries and companies that would consider involvement in
oil and gas exploration on the basis of invalid licenses issued by the
Greek Cypriot administration that they should take into consideration
the sensitivity of the situation and will of the Turkish Cypriots and
that they should avoid steps that would further complicate solution
efforts in the island,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a
statement. Turkish Cypriot authorities have criticized the agreement
between Greek Cyprus and Lebanon and said they had the right to benefit
from oil and gas resources in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry upheld the Turkish Cypriot position and
said Turkey also had legitimate rights and interests in the eastern
Mediterranean. “Part of the areas that the Greek Cypriot administration
intends to regulate through agreements concerns these legitimate rights
and interests,” it said. “Turkey is determined to protect its rights and
interests in the eastern Mediterranean and will not allow attempts to
erode them.”
The ministry said Turkey had contacted Lebanese authorities after it
learned that Lebanon and Greek Cyprus were holding discussions on the
agreement and raised the issue with the country’s prime minister and
foreign minister. Turkey was at the time assured that no such agreement
would be signed, the ministry said.
After learning that the agreement was signed on Jan. 17, Ankara asked
Lebanese authorities for an explanation and demanded that the agreement
not be implemented.
In 2003, Egypt signed a similar agreement with Greek Cyprus, again
disregarding Turkey’s position that the Greek Cypriot administration was
not authorized to sign agreements delineating the exclusive economic
zones in eastern Mediterranean on behalf of the entire island. Ankara
has told both Egypt and the UN that it does not recognize this agreement.
