Indonesian maid freed from Saudi Arabia's employer RIYADH (Antara): Rumiyati (33), an Indonesian domestic helper in Saudi Arabia, fled her employer's home here early this week with the help of another Saudi family who pitied the girl from Madiun District, East Java. "During her 10-year of service, Rumiyati never received her wages," the Labour Attache at the Indonesian Embassy Sukamto Javaladi told Antara on Tuesday. Rumiyati worked as housemaid of the Naif Hassan Musa Zahroni family, he added. "She was given the opportunity for a phone call to her parents in her hometown only once in the 10 years. And her employers had never let her out of the house, although she had never been physically abused, including sexual harassment," he said. He said the Indonesian maid managed to leave the house after a neighbor who refused to be identified reported her case to the Indonesian Embassy which later freed her with the help of Saudi police. He said the Embassy was now trying to demand Rumiyati's employer for the maid's 10-year wages. "It might amount to 72,000 riyals. Her former employer had said he would pay 70,000 riyals plus an air ticket to Indonesia," he added. Sukamto said such case might happen as Indonesian workers generally did not stick to their contract nor report their employers' address to the Indonesian embassy. He said there are now some 600,000 Indonesians, 90 pct of whom are female, in Riyadh, but only 320,000 are registered legally.(***) +++ ------------------------ Yahoo!
