DUBAI: Suicide has emerged as a major killer among the million-strong
Indian community in the UAE, with the number of such cases rising by
nearly 10 per cent in 2006.

Although the exact number of suicides was not known, there were 100
suicide cases out of 1,157 deaths registered last year, according to
Indian officials.

To deal with it, the Indian consulate here has started a psychological
counselling service run by the Indian community.

The 24-hour hotline will provide counselling to Indian workers,
Consul-General Venu Rajamony said. About labour complaints, he said that
the consulate has settled 1,310 cases out of over 1,408 complaints so far.

"About 53 cases of compensation were settled last year. And 203.5
million Indian rupees (about DH16.5 million) was received as
compensation. This amount was forwarded to district authorities in India
for onward distribution to the beneficiaries," said Rajamony.

"At present, visas are issued to UAE nationals and other nationals
having UAE residence visas the next day, with exceptions being made for
emergencies.

Overseas citizens of India and holders of people of Indian origin cards
are also issued visas as per the instructions of Indian government," he
said.

Nearly 20 per cent more people are now visiting India from UAE. This has
been reflected in the number of visas issued last year, which stands at
40,553 compared to 34,080 visas issued in 2005, he said.
