Massive Prisoner Outbreak at Kandahar Prison

25 April 2011 Afghan officials say more than 400 prisoners, many of them
Taliban, have escaped from Kandahar prison in southern Afghanistan through a
tunnel. The prison is reported to hold approximately 1200 prisoners.

Major Tim James, a spokesman for NATO forces in Kabul said the prison break
started shortly after dark and continued until just before dawn Monday
morning. NATO forces are on stand-by to try and track down these prisoners.

"We don't know the exact number or how it happened," James said. "We know
there's an operation ongoing to try to recover some of them."

"Any escaped prisoners are always a concern," James said, "It's too early to
say whether those prisoners pose a particular threat to [NATO] forces."

"A tunnel hundreds of metres long was dug from the south of the prison into
the prison and 476 political prisoners escaped last night," said General
Ghulam Dastageer Mayar.

It was not immediately clear if the tunnel had been built from inside the
prison or originated outside.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the jailbreak that began late
Sunday.

The Mangalorean.com reports that

"Deputy to Kandahar provincial police chief Shir Shah Yusufzai said so far
eight escaped prisoners had been re-arrested. Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, who claims
to speak for the Taliban outfit, said over 500 Taliban detainees have
escaped from the jail including 106 commanders to escape."

Deputy police chief Nasrallah Yusufzai spoke with reporters by telephone
saying that the 400 yard tunnel dug by the prisoners connected up to an
ancient underground irrigation network. This underground irrigation network
dates back to the time of Alexander the Great.

VOA News supplied some of the information for this report.
