Ken-- My longstanding rule for Open Space, workshops, any kind of participatory event that I facilitate, is "No observers."
If there is a way the person can attend and participate, I'm willing to clear that with the client. Or, like Chris, I sometimes bring an assistant. But I personally do not like the dynamics of having bystanders who are not involved with the process.
