Doug and all, After the gentleman made his little speech about how you might be wasting your time or whatever, I might have done as you did, which was wait for someone else to change the subject. Or I might have simply thanked him for his comments and asked if anyone in the room had a different opinion. Either way works. The second one is handy if no one else speaks up.
I would call the guy now and ask him if he'd like to continue to be included in the Inviters meetings.
