NOSAMO

On a cool rainy day in early afternoon in September, thirty six members of
NOSAMO, a fan club for a politician, Ro Mu-Hyun, who later became the
president of Korea in 2002. They gathered to come up with a draft plan for
the next stage of their evolution before their hero, heavily and constantly
bombed by opposition parties backed up by 3 major conservative papers, would
step out Cheongwadae, the presidential palace, in late February-less than 6
months remaining.

The debate-loving voluntary group that rushed from different parts of the
country was serious, tense, and yet excited to tackle and finish their
seemingly impossible task before next noon knowing their tendency of endless
debates, which had produced natural shattered, bitter feelings among members
of the fan club, in less than twenty four hours. The Open Space meeting
started in a circle and after a brief introduction to Open Space Technology
and the topic of the meeting. Soon the agenda wall-the bulletin board, was
filled up with 14 topics they would be discussing over the afternoon and
evening.

With agenda posted on the wall, the idea market opened and each poster
started to make a short pitch to attract as many people as possible to her
or his session. Once pitches and selections were over, real business of
discussions started.

Serious yet somewhat excited discussions proceeded in and out of the meeting
hall. Although there were man and his family who aroused suspicion among
sensitive members of the fan club that the man who accompanied his wife and
a young daughter both of whom seemed a disguise for his role was a spy from
the opposition camp to sneak in and find out what was going on in the
meeting, curiously it failed to do any harm on the meeting. Open Space
intact! He seemed to be just carried along helplessly by the tidal waves of
passion generated among the crowd.

Around mid night ended the breakout sessions and the people were tired
enough but yet too excited to go to bed. They wanted to celebrate their
definite victory over their love of never-ending debates. For them, it was
genesis of another collectively-created myth since they helped their hero
become their president and protected him from the impeachment crisis. The
late night party, highlighted by singing, dancing, and wine, came to an end
near dawn.

Next morning started in the circle again. People were surprised and
impressed by a report bound with a red cover laid on every chair. A magic.
The logistic team and a handful of volunteers compiled and copied reports
and bound them. Having the reports in their hands, the facilitator started
priority balloting that help the crowd converge on their priority issues.

Although they had to hurry up to drive long miles way back home despite the
rain, after a brief reflection the group left the venue with the report.

The host of the meeting, chairperson of future preparation committee,
retrospecting the meeting he said "It was the only meeting in years where we
could have meeting and finish without debate and quarrels and with concrete
results in a meeting of that kind."
