I deal with people anxious to disrupt the process by pointing out that that appears to be what they are doing. And then we talk about that.
I am happy to have skeptics on a planning group, but not cynics. The reason is that while both are high on doubt, only the skeptioc is high on hope. Cynics who are high on doubt and low on hope can suck a lot of energy out of a process. So early on it is worth pointing out that "problem seeking" is not a behaviour that is going to get us where we need to go in terms of planning. The best plan is to talk about that and talk about what it would take to have people work from a place of possibility, while still keeping their eyes on real constraints. AS I get older and more experienced I let people know pretty clearly that, while cynics are certainly welcome at the event, I won't work with cynics on a core team. Bring on skepticism and doubt, just be sure to use that to make our effort MORE possible and not less so. That's my two cents.
