Dear Jeff, Thank you for the "pass" (as in basketball ;-) ). My ultimate world cafe (and beyond) mentor was my grandfather. A coffee shop host of a humble Greek "cafeneio", in the middle of a small island-village... I was six or nine or ten but that experience was more formative than any training or accreditation. Why? Because my grandparents house would then be warmed up and "decorated" with those Swedish/Scandinavian wooden Dala horses next to the very old handmade local pottery... Relationships were built, genuinely, springing from authentic hospitality... Generocity thives there... A couple of years ago we (the Greek field of the Art of Hosting) translated the World Cafe Handbook. This is good, as well... and very needed. Provided we are connected to that spirit that needed no language to manifest... I firmly believe this is the time to form new processes along and together with so much that is changing... And to do that we need to ask the questions, we need to courageously explore... They feel like meta-questions... and in this "field" of Warm Dating ~ Open Space they seem to be sparkling free and rigorous... I was fortunate to be part of that field in the beginning of 2000 that gave birth to the Art of Hosting ..thread of hosting/ learning/collective leadership ways in Europe... A "random element", Buckminster Fuller would call it best. That birthing space was so much more comfortable than today's ...emergence was holding... Emergency is sharpening now... And that calls for our ultimate authenticity, responsibility and care to show up. Life and Death are sides of the same edge. What are the Questions that we need to be asking?... Where is the real juice? I will leave this question here while knowing that I am carrying it and listening to it from everywhere... :) Maybe it goes further on this "list"- maybe not. Yes the warm and exciting feelings that can arise in open spaces and warm data labs (and world cafes and talking circles) can be extraordinary! There is the excitement of exploration, curiosity, adventure, connection, and learning. And there are struggles, and moving thru challenges into breakthroughs in understanding, and feelings of open hearted love and appreciation... The risks that we take to enter into such hosted processes, and the trust required to follow the flow of the event and let it move us and transform us. The Warm Data Lab has been designed as a process to let people experience the rich interdependencies of complex systems and questions. As Nora Bateson likes to say "perception is action", so it's effects are not to be underestimated.
