Chuck made the exact point I was trying to make in my last message - Obama cannot (yet) legitimately speak for all Americans on the subject of the war. Period. If he tried, he would create a massive domestic political backlash by those whom he'd rather work with, and ultimately convince of the errors of their ways, rather than drive a huge wedge between.
It's not about whether you agree with Chuck's position on the war or not - I don't - it's, in fact, precisely this disagreement (with Chuck and the other ~50% of Americans who mostly or completely support the war) that precludes an apology at this point. They are *not* sorry for the war, and thus Obama cannot apologize on their behalf. Hopefully, this will change with time as we move further from the events, from the immediacy and the personal connections, and from the contemporary politics, but right now it would be political suicide. You asked, exactly, how it would be political suicide. I think you've got your answer. _______________________________________________ OSX-Nutters mailing list | [email protected] http://lists.tit-wank.com/mailman/listinfo/osx-nutters List hosted at http://cat5.org/
