Chuck made the exact point I was trying to make in my last message - Obama
cannot (yet) legitimately speak for all Americans on the subject of the
war. Period. If he tried, he would create a massive domestic political
backlash by those whom he'd rather work with, and ultimately convince of
the errors of their ways, rather than drive a huge wedge between.

It's not about whether you agree with Chuck's position on the war or not -
I don't - it's, in fact, precisely this disagreement (with Chuck and the
other ~50% of Americans who mostly or completely support the war) that
precludes an apology at this point. They are *not* sorry for the war, and
thus Obama cannot apologize on their behalf. Hopefully, this will change
with time as we move further from the events, from the immediacy and the
personal connections, and from the contemporary politics, but right now it
would be political suicide.

You asked, exactly, how it would be political suicide. I think you've got
your answer.
