Once again I've seen one of those "How would you like having the DMV
run healthcare?" things and wondered why anyone wouldn't be in favor
of that. In every encounter I have ever had with the DMV they have
handled crowds of people with courtesy and efficiency. They have
never lost my records or acted confused as to why I was there. Since
the advent of the Internet I have been able to conduct a lot of
business with them online.

I contrast my private health insurance co., Aetna, has fucked up two
of the last three interactions that I have had with them, causing
missed appointments and really pissing me off. By all accounts my
experience is hardly unique.

'Private' health insurance isn't really in the private sector in the
sense that if you get bad service you can take your business to any of
a number of competitors. I have one option for health insurance. Many
states have only one insurer doing business in the whole state.

I think this notion that people believe anything labeled 'private'
must necessarily provide better service than something labeled
'government' just flies in the face of actual experience.
