Power+home for a few seconds (10?) forces the phone to shutdown, then
connect it to your computer and press AND HOLD the home button. It is,
evidently, important that you connect the iPhone cable to the
computer, THEN to the iPhone, THEN press+hold Home. You need to press
Home all the way through the white apple load screen until you get the
"Recovery Mode" dialog again.
If it still can't recover, you will probably have to go to an Apple
Store or call the 800 number.
