I bought it mainly to use as an ebook reader, and I'm really happy with it.
Since it's only been out for a week here, it's still too new to confortably use it in public. I mean, there's been so much media coverage of the device that almost everybody knows what it is and wants to touch it… It's annoying, since I want to read/work in peace and I did not buy the thing to show off! I honestly can't wait for that to go away, so if you're shy or simply want to work and have people leave you alone, it's something you should take into account. Unlike Jared's missus, mine is quite taken by the thing (she also enjoys Strategery, btw. Any similar games you'd recommend?) but we have found it in ourselves to share… And since I'm saving up to get an (hopefully to be announced next week) mac pro, I can't justify buying another iPad just yet. About the keyboard, well, it works fine, and if you're worried, just get the camera connection kit at the same time. It allows you to plug in your Apple USB keyboard and just use it to type. It will say it's an unsupported device, but it even recognizes the special keys for changing keybord layout on the Japanese keyboard! It does work pretty much anywhere. The problem I have with it is the fact that Apple only saw fit to give if a few, but only a few, keyboard layouts. I don't understand why, since they are in iPhone OS they would limit that. It's annoying for me, because I strongly dislike the stupid French AZERTY keyboard, and I have to use the English layout to write French. This makes the substitutions pretty much useless and rather time consuming (having to press and hold for the accents doesn't help either). I'm still waiting for a stylus, to see if I blew it or not by buying Penultimate. To take notes with my finger is out of the question, and with the home-made stylii I've done just mleh… Pages for iPad is fine but a bit of a hassle to use for "syncing" documents though. On your iPad, you need to open Pages, get to your document( by centering it on the screen) but not open it, click on the export icon at the bottom (that’s the square with an arrow coming out of it) then select the format you wish (pages, word, pdf). Then plug it to your computer, wait for the sync/backup cycle to complete then go to your device, click on the apps tab, scroll down to File Sharing, select your document then save it to… So it's completely manual. I guess you now understand why the others said they just emailed theirs! It would be so much better with idisk integration (not even mentioning google docs, dropbox etc, all of which Goodreader works fine fine and it allows for text editing as well. But it won’t overwrite your document on dropbox (haven’t tried gdocs yet) so you need to save it in another location). _______________________________________________ OSX-Nutters mailing list | [email protected] http://lists.tit-wank.com/mailman/listinfo/osx-nutters List hosted at http://cat5.org/
