How are equipment and adaptations funded in the USA? In the UK, equipment is
provided on free permanent loan
from social services (though there some local authorities levy a nominal
charge), and adaptations are grant
funded (anyone on a means tested benefit usually gets the full cost of the
adaptation funded).

This is really my major hassle. Our Medicare (socialized medicine in US for
all over 65) pays for a bedside commode, and that is about all for bathroom
stuff. Medicaid ( which is means tested and some elderly people get both
Medicare and Medicaid ) will pay for a shower seat, but I can't get the good
rubbermaid kind, only the metal leg kind, and I hate those, so I don't use
it. I can get a bathboard through medicaid and I do use those sometimes. I
either ask the clients to pay for the equipment if I think they can, or I pay
for it myself, or I have been able to get a lot of equipment paid for by the
arthritis foundation. I have to have a formed signed by MD specifiying what
type of arthritis, but it does not have to be the primary diagnosis. -- Jody
