Hi Lucia, My name is Ryan Hemelt, I am an OT student at the University of St. Augustine in FL.
1)I define OT as enabling someone to do meaningful occupations. Occupations are anything meaningful that we do and can be categorized into 4 groups: taking care of ourselves (ADLs), having fun(play/leisure), being productive(work), and resting(sleep). As OT's, we should enable a ballance of all these occupations in patients. 2)I don't quite understand question 2, but I define payed employmemt or gainful employment as being a vocation and meaningful things people do as occupations. 3)It is important to define our profession to give ourselves an identity, seperate from others, to clearly define exactly what we do. 4)And I decided to join the field of OT so I could work on real issues that people have(occupational deficits, to enable them directly to what that individual client desires, nothing more or less. My answers are short, but I'm sure you appreciate that. However, If you would like me to expand, I would be more that happy to.
