I do not believe that there is a boiler-plate answer to this question. For example, for me taking out the garbage is a purposeful activity, but has little meaning. On the other hand, if someone has been assigned this role in their family and value this role in terms of taking out the garbage, then this is meaningful and purposeful to that person. It's about values. As OT's our concern is with what the patient values as important occupations.

Subject: Meaning verus Purpose

Hello:

I am interested to know other's opinion about the differences, if any,
between the two terms MEANINGFUL and PURPOSEFUL as they relate to activity.

Thanks,

Ron
