I to am new to OTRS so I don't know if you can set a default password.
However having just tested importing a user with the method you mentioned.
If the user goes to  /otrs/customer.pl and enters their username into 'Lost
Your Password?' they will receive an email giving them a link to follow to
receive a new password. The password is then sent to them by email straight
away and then they can login normally.
