Hello!
Question time again:
Can anyone explain why the DS2423 counts when its input channels are
disconnected? Using a magnetic switch I've accomplished the usual
example application. Well its running on either a VM of Windows98SE
and the original manager program for DS devices. And as it happens I'd
start it going, and with the magnet in place. I'd move the magnet away
and it would complain no device. But when the magnet is returned to
the switch I would see an advance in the chosen counter.

Of course the version Four drivers viewer doesn't indicate any change
between steps regarding the switch.

Despite the fact that these "DS2423 4kbit 1-Wire RAM with Counter"
devices were discontinued by the firm and the datasheet even indicates
that it is not recommended for new designs, I am working towards
completing a design that was originally studied some time earlier.
(The reason why I bought the chip that is. Bought because at the time
the firm was DS not Maxim and samples were not part of the company's
method of doing things, then.)
