Then I formed an 18 GA solid wire into a "U" shape around the chip such that it just touched the tips of the other 7 pins I then soldered my "one-wire" lead wire to pin 2 and the ground wire to the solid wire already soldered to the other pins. After that I squirted hot melt glue over the whole thing to protect the connections. Not too pretty but it worked.
