Interesting.  In the datasheet I grabbed bit 7 simply shows "-".  The 
DS1825 shows it as "0" though and also says "Bit 7 and Bit 4 of the 
configuration register are reserved for internal use and cannot be 
overwritten."

However -- and this may have been what you are referring to -- the text 
of the MAX31826 datasheet says: "Bits [7:4] are reserved for internal 
use and cannot be overwritten; they return a 1 when read."

Sounds like a really easy way to test whic decide it really is.
