I'm using Raspbian Wheezy on the RPi and I applied the suggested setting,
switching the RPi with the Remote owserver down to USB 1.1
As the only task of this RPi is to act as owserver, USB speed doesn't matter
that much to me.
Thanks a lot to you for pointing that out. The remote owserver is running
fine for two days now. Brilliant!
Remaining issue: as it can happen from more than one reason, that a device
disappears from the network, how can I prevent a client querying the server
to get stuck when there's no response?
Couls it be related to the message
Can't call method "fileno" on an undefined value at
/usr/share/fhem/FHEM/lib/OWNet.pm line 381 ?

You say that the second one uses ftdi232. There are some issues with USB on
Raspberry. Look at this thread.

A quick solution could be adding dwc_otg.speed=1 to /boo/cmdline.txt it
will
switch usb to 1.1 only so the network speed will decrease significantly.
This helped with a usb wireless keyboard.
Also the newest kernels have better usb drivers but still not perfect.
