Have you checked for the w1 kernel functions? I have the same problems
(chips are sometimes missing) when the ds2490 kernel module is active.
These problems disappeared immediately after unloading that module.

Error code -71 looks like a kernel/hardware related problem. Do you use
a hub? I had a lot of USB hubs which have been rubbish.
