Savest and easiest is definitely a clean reinstallation.

But as I assume this is not possible.
 
Can you solve this by using a symlink?

If not you can change the data dir and trigger a rescan using occ files:scan 
--all

In this case the clients will do a full resync.
There will remain zombie dataset in the database but we can clean this 
afterwards. 
(I have some sql script for this somewhere - I'll post this as soon as I find 
this again ;-) )
