Every in place upgrade from IIS6 -> IIS7 I have tried has been a train wreck
- and Windows is never quite the same after an upgrade anyway. Your best bet
is a clean install of Windows Server 2008 R2 w/ IIS7 and move the apps
across incrementally (Application Request Routing for IIS can help you out
with this as well).

Also keep in mind that since Win2008R2 Windows Server editions are x64 only
- so it is probably a good time for you to make the move from x86 to x64 on
the server as well, if you have not already.

We're in the middle of doing this for a bunch of customer applications as I
write this.
