I should add that the Oracle/Sun error I get is 25099, and the Oracle Java website has this note -
SYMPTOMS While Java installation is in progress, a message box with the following error is displayed: Error 25099. Unzipping core files failed. CAUSE The actual root cause of this issue is still under investigation. Error 25099 indicates that the Java installation process has failed. WORKAROUND Step 1 : Completely delete content of the following directory: * C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\ (modify the folder appropriately for 64-bit Windows ) This is the method I have always used (but the first time I discovered the note on this error condition) This is a PITA since it is necessary to uninstall (or stop services and unload Java), reboot, then delete the folder. I'm surprised Oracle can't work out better update solution. _____ Ian Thomas Victoria Park, Western Australia _____ From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of Michael Lyons Sent: Friday, July 01, 2011 7:30 AM To: 'ozDotNet' Subject: RE: [OT] Java Updates My experience doesn't fair much better. I get a UAC dialog every time I launch windows to allow the update checker to run, pretty poor since it's a security issue if you don't update. ------ Michael Lyons From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of Ian Thomas Sent: Thursday, 30 June 2011 5:57 PM To: 'ozDotNet' Subject: [OT] Java Updates I use IE browser and some XML utilities (eg, Stylus Studio) that use JRE and somehow I have the two annoying services Java Update Checker + Java Update Scheduler that have no idea of how to deal with Windows security. Every update attempt on my Win7 Standard User system fails, if I let it proceed. My solution is to uninstall the 32-bit and 64-bit applications (currently Java 6 Update 24), then download the updates from Oracle and manually install them. Does anyone else have a better experience / a better solution? _____ Ian Thomas Victoria Park, Western Australia
