That would be the ideal way of keeping the code secret, but historically
the "engine" of this product is available so that customers can build their
own apps around it, be that desktop or web service (and desktop apps are
popular in this market). The old DLL was written in Borland C++ so it was
harder to disassemble just by its nature (but not impossible!), now it's
rewritten in C# and one is suddenly and soberingly reminded how naked
everything is.

I later found out how crippled the free dotfuscator is, it doesn't
integrate with MSBuild or Visual Studio, it can't re-sign with SNK or
Authenticode, no build events, etc. I was forced to fill in a "give me a
quote" web form, but no reply yet. I hope it's cheap.
