disseminated intravascular coagulation: it basically means your body has
lost its ability to clot blood throughout the whole system. Pretty serious.
I have heard it said that a woman would not be given a blood transfusion
immediately after a severe PPH here, that we would wait for the CBC the next
day. Well, the hospital had the CBC back within an hour, the woman had 4
units of packed red cells and platelets infused as fast as it was safe to
run it in before the results were back. I have never seen people move so
fast or so well, the emergency services were fantastic. And it was just a
small suburban community hospital.
