Hi kelly,
Optimal Foetal Positioning promotes the concept that the baby will lie with
it's back, it's heaviest part to wherever gravity finds it. In other words,
if you sit with your knees lower than your belly, so your belly is forward
of your body, then the baby's back will swing forward. If you are constantly
sitting in positions that cause your belly to slump, then the baby will
swing into a posterior position.
If you go to the gentlebirth website www.gentlebirth.org, you will find a
good paper on optimal fetal positioning which gives concepts and exercises
to promote good positioning of babies, and to help turn ones sitting in
posterior positions (includes lots of hands and knees, sitting back to front
on dining chairs etc etc). Figures quoted in this article suggest that as
many as 20% of babies are now beginning labour in the posterior position -
all to do with our sedentary lifestyle!!
The information was put together in the book 'Optimal Foetal Positioning' by
Jean Sutton which is still available.
Hope this helps,
Sue
