LOL. I ran into that same oddity myself when researching backup/restore methods.
I continue to use stsadm and haven't had any trouble, despite the caveats surrounding size and out-of-place restore. It certainly does a damn site better job than CommVault has managed -- and is also much, MUCH faster. I may just be tempting fate though. :) I haven't tried Data Protection Manager<http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/data-protection-manager/dpm-product-details.aspx> which is the only other tool mentioned in the MS articles I've read but others claim it's very good. For larger site collections, see the recommendations in Back up and restore site collections by using built-in tools (Office SharePoint Server 2007)<http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc706871.aspx>. (From: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263441.aspx) Follow the link and all it does is use setsitelock to make the SC read only and then it uses stsadm -o backup to take the back up. It seems the article contradicts itself? Has anyone had issues with site collection backups with 15GB or more?
