Check to see if their browsers are rendering the site in IE7 mode or worse in quirks mode. By default IE8 has a setting to treat all intranet sites as sites that require IE7 compatibility - which may be causing this.

We still have the profile picture updating issue that was introduced last year and cleared up in the Dec 2011 CU (I think.) Frankly, I've been a bit wary of applying any CUs just because of the potential for issues. We're migrating to a new server soon, so we'll update at that time. In the meantime, I'll suggest a more recent ie for the users. Did I mention they're using Windows XP too? (They are using IE8 I think.) Anyone heard of that one before? Tried a bit of Googling but can't see anything, and I can't reproduce on my machine.
