You actually always did need a appID but the CTP had it hardcoded in. For
those using the CTP it will expire on the 31st December so time to upgrade.
As a developer you can now get a AppID instantly and it free* to use on a
public facing site (limits and conditions apply but it won't hold you up
from developing).

Let me tell you the appid is much nicer than the old token system!

The control is now Silverlight3 so if you're interested in out of browser,
full screen mouse zoom, perspective 3D then check it out.

We will be moving the DeepEarth controls - thinking of renaming to "The
DeepEarth Toolkit" - to Silverlight3 in the next few weeks and concentrating
on supporting the new Bing Maps control only.

although one thing that IS annoying, is that it looks like you now need a
bing maps "key" in order to use the control...

Subject: New release of the Silverlight Bing Maps control

For anyone who hasn't seen the announcement yet today, they have released a
new version of the silverlight bing maps control

http://www.microsoft.com/maps/

Changes to the SDK can be seen here
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee681889.aspx

the interesting one for me, is the inclusion of the "MapItemsControl" class,
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.maps.mapcontrol.mapitemsco
ntrol.aspx

It allows for databinding to a map layer now, meaning I can get rid of the
custom stuff on my blog :-)
