FWIW, the entymology of this was that "smurfing" was a mechanism used by money launderers that was in vogue at the time to get around reporting requirements (have lots of drones make small transactions) and in this case the user was "burning" an identity, so we called it the flaming smurf attack. It painted an interesting visual in your head as well, so the name stuck...
