Well, we finally have an offical announcement, cleared through legal and everything! Here are the official words:

Palm IIIx(TM) Organizer Display


The new Palm IIIx display features a brighter screen for better viewing in low light and sunlight and more contrast for improved readability.

Some Palm IIIx organizers may display faint background lines on the display in applications with grids such as the month view in the Date Book application. These lines are present on the displays of both PalmPilot(TM) and Palm III(TM) organizers as well; however, because of the new technology used to improve the clarity of the Palm IIIx display, the lines may be more apparent on the Palm IIIx organizers. Palm Computing continues to explore software options that we believe will help to reduce the visibility of the lines. We expect to make a software update available shortly.

For the present, to reduce the visibility of the background lines, try adjusting the screen contrast using the contrast control located on the left side of the device.
