We're nearing completion of our open source alternative (though
you shouldn't compare it to AvantGo. That wouldn't be a fair assumption
for either of us). 

        It's going to have quite a lot more features than I've seen in
similar commercial products, such as the AvantGo 2.x product (the
IIS/Client Server version). When it's available, we'll let you know where
you can find the full source. At this point, it is completely OS
independant, has zero client-side components (other than the palm-side
application), and be 100% free for use and free to modify. Quite a fun
little project. It works now, but we need to clean up the interface a bit
before we toss it out to the real world.
