text is normally best compressed using ZIP of LZ77 (arj?) algorithms.
you should be able to find documentation here:

it is a great msdos archive - with a load of relevant issues relating
to Palm (msdos = 286) :) they cover a load of compression, advanced
graphics etc.. enjoy :>
