  it all depends on the bitmaps you are storing.. what depth? etc.
  in my recent project, i managed to compress five 2bit bitmaps of 
  the following sizes:

    152x120, 
    304x240,
    608x480,
   1216x960  and
   2432x1920      into 88K

  from the windows .BMP files (16bit) the compression was from
  3 Megs to 88K.. i used simple runlength encoding, which also
  made it easier to display the bitmaps in real time (no uncompression
  (complex) was required)
