Note that I was engaging in a certain amount of speculation, since I don't
know what the actual RF format of the PalmVII radio is. I just know what is
currently the easiest way to achieve efficient channel utilization, and that
means power-hungry DSP's, for both receiving and transmitting.
If the RF designers considered push to be really important, all it takes is
a 1-bit message to the individual Palm -- "You've got a message waiting,
wake up and call in for it". (Of course that message actually must carry
enough bits to individually address that specific Palm...) That much data
transmission capability would look a lot like a pager, and could be done
with a little dedicated circuitry that could be pretty low-power.
My guess is that since Palm is not touting the push capability, they didn't
think push was important enough, so the circuitry is not there.
