You are in basically the some position I was in before I started programming
for the Palm. I didn't know that much about C or which IDE (Integrated
Development Environment) to use. I think the IDE decision needs to be made
first because the relevance of example code that you run across, as well as
the topic of many of the posts here, depend on the IDE being talked about.
By IDE I loosely mean your choice between GNU C (otherwise known as GCC) or
Code Warrior. There are other IDE's such as Pendragon Forms, Satellite
Forms, cBas, KVM, Jump, Pila, etc. You have some research ahead of you
before you can make your decision. I'm not going to say what language most
Palm programmers use or whether GCC or Code Warrior is better because I
don't know the answers to those questions. A lot depends on your goals and
what kind of programs you intend to write.
There is a good section in the Rhodes book that discusses the pros and cons
of the various IDE's. I think you will find that book indispensable in other
ways too.
My prediction will be that whichever you choose, GCC or CW, that within a
year you will wish you had selected the other. Not that you will really NEED
to switch, but you will eventually run across some annoying limitation in
one or the other, or you will recognize a major advantage that one has that
the other doesn't. Unfortunately this paradoxical moment will occur far
enough into your Palm programming that it will be extremely painful to
switch. C'est la vie.

The Palm website is a pretty good place to start looking for documentation
and example code. I also got the book "Palm Programming: The Developer's
Guide" by Neil Rhodes and Julie McKeehan. O'Reilly & Assoc. Inc. 1999. I
think it is a pretty good book and helped me quite a bit.
