In that case, I'd try to change your UI. You really don't want a big list to pop up.
If the list is that big, you may want a lookup field like in Address Book. Dedicating
a form for selecting an item from the list starts to make sense. Popup lists really
only work well when all the items are visible. Even lists that are always there don't
handle scrolling very well, and are best used when only a few taps are needed to
scroll from the top to the bottom.
