I hate to rant on my favorite product. As a matter of fact I make my
living on Palm and evangelize everyday.

But here is my situation. I've run into FIVE m500 series palms that no
longer hotsync via USB. Yes that's right 5 of the maybe 15 I personally
know about have started failing in USB hotsync.

Before you think I'm a newbie and don't know what to do to try and fix them
let me go through what I've done:

        1. Soft Reset
        2. Hard Reset
        3. Remove and re-installed the Hotsync Manager
        4. Deleting the ConnectionMgrDB on the Palm
        5. installed the update from Palm (for long hotsync timeouts)
http://www.palm.com/support/downloads/40update.html
        6. Re-installing USB drivers
        7. Removing any USB HUBS
        8. Changing which USB port the Palm is connected.

I am a EE and know how to troubleshoot systems. Everything I see points to
a *HARDWARE* issue with the Palm m500 series. Why do I believe this?

        1. I hard reset the palm so if it was a software issue that
            should have fixed it.
        2. On all 5 devices serial continues to work.
        3. On all 5 devices they will not work in other known good cradles.
        4. On all 5 devices they will not work on other known working
computers (ie USB drivers, Hotsync, etc).
        5. They all *did* work in the beginning but now do not.

This all points to a hardware issue with the palm m500 series.

What amazes me is if I've seen 5 of 15 devices fail why can't I find more
usenet/web posts about it. There are a few. Mostly pertain to the timeout
issue with long syncs (ie avantgo etc). But this is NOT that problem. It
is something entirely different. One of the five was my own personal
device so I can vouch that it wasn't dropped, soaked, microwaved, etc. I
kept it in a perfect environment (on my desk it was a test unit).

Please post if you know of people having this problem so it can be raised
to Palm accordingly.

Thanks,
-Jason
