Different solutions are appropriate for different situations. What will
happen if the database does not reside on the local system where the user
syncs his device. I'll not do the stupidity of keeping the device into sync
mode, burning it's batteries, till the data transmission on the tcp/ip
completes. What will happen if the client tells you to add the support of
one more database. Since you are trying to incorporate Excel hence it seems
that you are writting an application for a general users not for corporate
users (Just a guess). Excel is something which I'll assume that will be
present on every system (unless you are using the ultra cool Linux :-) or
Mac) hence you can go ahead with solution you have proposed.

A lot of databases supports the import and export of CSV volumes hence my
crude solution will still work if you have to change your target database in
the future. No doubt that for every probelm you are going to have n
solutions and in every solution there exist many opportunities of
improvement.
