HIRes bitmaps are using version 3 of bitmaps (which specifies density and other things). You cannot simply add a bigger bitmap at the end of a bitmap family.
The very latest version of PilRC (2.9p5) supports HIRes bitmaps through the BITMAPFAMILYEX keyword. Check it out. I do not think that you need any code at all in your app if the bitmap family is correct.
