I did some testing when I ran across this and I believe that the problem is in the palm database manager code. I believe they perform a linear look-up when adding records to a database. The larger the database the longer it takes. This tends to be noticeable only during synchronization. I would add that a full (bidirectional) sync will tend to go faster since you are probably making only a few changes to the database, versus uploading them all every time. I talked to a couple of Palmsource engineers at this year's PalmSource conference about this performance issue. They recognize the problem and attribute it to code designed for 1990's PIM functionality. Although they were very nonspecific, I was told that there are some significant changes on the horizon that will improve this. I also talked to Roger Stringer, who has figured out how to get a handheld to fly with tens of thousands of records (Hi Roger!).
