Have you looked at the printers used in point of sale for car rental companies? I realize they're integrated with the whole unit, but depending on how many you need, you may be able to get just the printer from the companies that make those units.
Of course, re-reading your post, it sounds like you need full-size printing capability but just in a ruggedized format....
